Mask of Perception
In this piece, I explore the theme of perception — both self-perception and the ways in which we are seen by others. The multitude of eyes layered over the face symbolises excessive scrutiny, societal pressure, and constant self-surveillance in contemporary life. This “mask” made of countless gazes reflects how we often view ourselves through the eyes of others, losing connection with our own inner identity and authenticity. The collage speaks to the inner conflict between personal truth and external expectation. I aim to highlight how modern standards, media representation, and information overload can distort our sense of self. It is a visual metaphor for anxiety, vulnerability, and inner tension, but also a call for self-awareness, reflection, and clarity. Through texture, layered imagery, and repetition, the work encourages the viewer to consider how they perceive themselves versus how they are perceived, and how to reclaim agency in defining their own identity.
